whenever i come home from the market and spread out my fresh purchases, i feel on top of the world.  like i am the richest person.  the most fortunate, to be able to behold such natural color and beauty and then experience an array of fantastic tastes.

cider and sauce

floating floatingi had my first canning experience last week.  april invited me to spend the day making and canning apple sauce.  it reminded me of a friend’s thesis. he created beautiful and simple mugs and then set up a space for the viewer to sit and drink tea.  he addressed the idea of being present in and aware of the moment in which one is living.  i remember being struck by his words of being aware of one’s actions, even in simple tasks like washing the dishes.  i was reminded of these thoughts as we went through the process of canning.  washing each apple, pealing, cutting…

apple cutting

and then this weekend, i went to a friend of a friend’s parents house for apple cider pressing!  it was the first fall day without rain, and it was gorgeous!  the colors were truly alive.

and after eating enough doughnuts and chili to feed a small army, with some pressing thrown in there, we made more than 120 gallons of fresh, delicious, sweet cider.  what could be more fall?
